So I’ve been back in LA for a couple of weeks now, which means I’m getting back into my old local papers, chief among them the LA Weekly. The LA Weekly is sort of like your grungy older cousin, the one you go to when you want a straight answer about something you can’t ask your parents. But that’s neither here nor there.
Today I got their email newsletter (I haven’t found RSS feeds there yet, and despite my love for the Weekly, I have to say that their site is a little bit 1.0) and I saw this great short story by Etgar Keret, An Exclusive. It’s about a man who gets dumped by his reporter girlfriend. It starts a little slow but gets really great, I think.
Of all the difficult things to write, I think dialogue tops the list. That is why page 2 of this story has my favorite dialogue ever written. The format is brilliant. Now I’m just a little annoyed that I didn’t think of it first.
